This image shows the developing brain vasculature seen from the rear in a two-day old zebrafish. Using a stable transgenic line that visualizes the membrane of the blood vessel cells, fine detail can be seen, such as vessels seeking their growth path in the bottom right hand corner. As this is a time of rapid development and rearrangement, structures such as the fin vessel to the left and right are just evolving. Studying these data, we can start to understand how blood vessels are formed and maintained.
Technique: The image was acquired using a Zeiss Z.1 light-sheet fluorescence microscope with a Plan-Apochromat 20×/1.0 Corr nd=1.38 objective and a scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor detection unit. Signal from stable transgenic lines was false-coloured and a maximum intensity projection was produced using Fiji.
