This image shows the developing brain vasculature in a three-day old zebrafish from the rear, or dorsal perspective. As these data are 3D but shown in 2D, a depth-coded projection was used to show anatomical relationships (yellow – closer to the viewer, blue – furthest away from the viewer). These data help us understand 3D relationships of blood vessels and how they are formed. We can also study how and where they grow in development, see how this changes upon drug treatment, and examine changes in age. The full width of the head is about 600 micrometre, whereas a credit card is about 700 micrometre thick.
Technique: The image was acquired using a Zeiss Z.1 light-sheet fluorescence microscope with a Plan-Apochromat 20×/1.0 Corr nd=1.38 objective and a scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor detection unit. Signal from a stable transgenic line was colour-coded for depth and a maximum intensity projection was produced using Fiji.
